Nelly Launch Party

Wednesday night was the UK launch party for Nelly.com, already well established in Scandinavia & Europe, they are now launching in the UK with a brand list & own label collections to rival ASOS’s. Personally I have been longing for another store in the same vein as ASOS, but with a different selection of brands and I love that Nelly stocks lots of my favourite Scandinavian labels like Acne, Stylein & Dagmar, which can sometimes be hard to get a hold of here.

The night was hosted at the beautiful Aqua in London, with terraces overlooking Oxford Street & the some of the tastiest cocktails & canapes I’ve ever tried, it was the perfect venue for the event. We were treated to free cocktails, goodie bags, nail makeovers and not forgetting a free pair of Nelly shoes! I had my eye on the studded loafers and spiked wedges! I’ll leave the rest to the photos…

I wish I’d thought to take a photo of this dress earlier in the day, it’s quite hard to see the cut in these dark windswept photos, but with the rush to get the train it totally slipped my mind. I made it a few days before, as I had nothing to wear & was too broke to buy something new! I paired it with my trusty Rick Owens wedges for comfort and my COS belt, which I just seem to be chucking over everything recently!

Return of Winter

Those of you that live in the UK will be well aware that, despite having lovely warm, sunny Spring weather last week, this week feels like winter all over again & today it has even decided to snow! Rather than feel miserable at the horrible day outside, I decided to take the opportunity to wear (hopefully for the last time till Autumn!) a couple of my favourite things that I made last year…

I brought this amazing faux-fur from an upholstery shop, as it was the softest, most realistic faux-fur I’d ever come across, nicer in fact than even the very expensive types you get in good fabric shops. I love the look of fur, but couldn’t wear real fur myself, so I love that this looks & feels just like the real deal. I brought it mainly to use for the removable collar on the black cropped tux jacket I made, but with quite a lot left over I decided to make this snood out of it too. Even though it’s such a simple little accessory & took no time or skill to make, I think it’s one of my favourites, I have worn it practically every single day over the last few months. Small details such as lining it with thin china silk, so that it wouldn’t make my neck hot & sticky like my other snoods do, mean it has become my go to neckwear for Winter & my other scarfs haven’t had a look in since I made it!

I had been looking for a maxi dress like this one almost all of last Autumn, I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for anywhere so decided to make this out of the bits of leftover jersey I had lying around. It has panels of a heavier ribbed jersey down both sides, this wasn’t a conscious decision, but more due to the fact I didn’t have enough of the plain cotton jersey I used as the main fabric left & this was spare! I love the way it turned out though, I think sometimes my best efforts seem to be the pieces I just knock together & take no care over!

Brain Print Shirt

This shirt bodysuit was from one of the last collections I did as part of my degree, I think it’s one of my favourite things that I made during my 3 years there, it’s quite simple, but I like that, as it lets the print do all the talking. For this same reason, I’ve paired it with just a plain maxi & minimal jewellery here.

I’m not usually much of a print person, but we had to use print for that particular project & typical of me, I had to pick something slightly dark & gory! I’ve altered the colours & it’s been slightly manipulated, but the print is actually an image of brain tissue under a microscope, I saw it & knew I had to use it, I thought it was so beautiful! I’m hoping to have some spare time soon to get some more fabrics printed & make a few more pieces with the same print, as I think it’d look great as a draped dress or pair of leggings & I really like the thought of it as a lining for a jacket too.

On a separate note, apologies for the lame hiding behind my hair pose, my skin is still totally ruined & this is the only angle it looks remotely decent from. I feel awkward enough in front of a camera when I look nice, let alone when I’m feeling a total mess, but I felt some outfit posts were so long overdue that I really should do some anyway, especially as my skin is showing no signs of healing just yet. For those wondering whats wrong with it, I switched to a different pressed powder, my skin had an awful reaction to it & came out in a rash & lots of spots. I then brought some spot treatment gel to fix it, my usual one wasn’t in stock & I wanted it sorting quickly so I brought a different brand, left it on overnight & woke up with burns, scabs & holes all over my face where it had been! It’s scared my skin quite badly & some of the holes were so deep that even now, about 2 weeks later, they are still raw! Fingers crossed it gets better soon…

Faux Fur Collar Jacket

Along with black boots, black tailored jackets are something I can never stop buying, even though half of one of my wardrobes is full of near identical versions, I always seem to be able to justify another. This one is from the last collection I did for my degree, it seemed the perfect excuse to make another black jacket, actually, I think all of my collections have been excuses to make things for myself…

The body of the jacket is made from a beautiful wool/silk blend suiting, which gives it a more relaxed & less structured feel, even though it is extremely structured on the inside, to keep the general shape. The faux fur is actually from an interiors shop, it is the most luxurious & realistic faux fur I’ve come across, plus it’s super warm & snuggly, just like the real thing. I honestly wonder why people still buy real fur anymore when the faux versions are this nice? I decided to make the fur removable, so I’d still be able to wear it when it’s not quite so cold, underneath is distressed black leather, like the little pocket. It’s the perfect jacket for days like today, even though it’s cropped, it’s really warm thanks to the fur & wool. I kept the shape of this quite boxy, as it suited the overall look of the collection it was part of best, but kept it cropped & the waist nipped in, so that it would be wearable for me.

Talking of things I can’t stop buying, handbags are not one of them, so you’ll see this battered Balenciaga a lot. I have a total of 4 handbags, this one for every day, a black clutch I attached a strap to for when I’m going out, a tiny little messenger for gigs / festivals / times I don’t really want to carry a bag but need somewhere to keep my makeup stash & a massive leather hold all. I am definitely more of a shoe, well, black boot person.

Draped Leather Jacket

FAIIINT, Draped Leather Jacket, Outfit, Black Jacket, Custom, HandmadeFAIIINT, Draped Leather Jacket, Outfit, Black Jacket, Custom, Handmade

This jacket was supposed to be a sort of tester, I’ve never made a jacket out of leather before & I knew there would be some mistakes that wouldn’t become apparent in the toile, as leather behaves so differently to any other material, so I brought the cheapest skins I could find, covered in scuffs & holes, with the intention of then making myself a nicer one, in more expensive leather afterwards.

Despite there being a few kinks that needed working out, such as the fact the sleeves shrunk to an awkward length & some things I would do differently now I know better, I love it enough, flaws & all, to wear this as the finished piece. I feel surprisingly proud of it, considering it was a first attempt & I expected it to end up a misshapen mess! I also ended up falling for the cheap, battered charcoal leather, it is so paper-thin, soft & slouchy that it worked perfectly & produced such a nice drape to the front. I should have known really, I’m a sucker for worn in, battered looking things. I still want to make a better quality version, with all the kinks worked out at some point, possibly in a dirty taupe or nude, but I think I’ll still keep this also, I feel strangely attached to it now.
