I love little details in an outfit. An interesting cut, an unusual flash of texture, a great accessory, can all turn a basic outfit into something far more compelling. Like the way this jacket is cut higher in the back, letting the thick leather belt peek out from underneath. It’s a small, simple touch, but one that I can never resist playing up when wearing a piece like this.

I’ve been wearing this topaz necklace that I picked up in Chiang Mai to death ever since I got back. It was one of those pieces my heart wanted as soon as I saw it, and it’s already had so many other admirers who’ve fallen in love with it too. I love that it’s such an eyecatching piece, but one that I can wear with everything I own, day or night. Plus it always makes a piece feel extra special when people ask where they can get one for themselves and you can say it’s a one off.

Classic black ankle boots are my weakness, I can never seem to have enough pairs and I can always find a reason to add another pair to the collection. I actually cleared out a heap of shoes a few weekends ago, but barely a week later and these River Island boots have made their way into my wardrobe! I’m hopeless! The classic shape and shimmery textured nubuck sold them to me, but they are incredibly comfortable too making them a perfect addition to my everyday footwear.

The weather has really not been playing ball lately, between the constant rain, dark days and storm Doris, I’ve not had much chance to get outside with the camera. It’s just typical, as I’ve been dying to show off some of my favourite new additions ever since I came back from my holiday.

I love dressing for the cold, but when it’s forever raining all I want to do is curl up in my comfiest, staple pieces and hide inside. This jacket/cardigan hybrid from H&M has become one of my new favourites, half because it looks great with everything, but also because the huge draped front means I can wrap myself up in it like a wearable blanket. Super cozy!

I’d dismissed ballet flats for the longest time, mainly because despite everyone telling me they’re the comfiest thing ever, they really never are on my huge, wide feet. Clarks have a really good selection of wide fit womens shoes in at the moment, all in very classic styles, including these leather ballerinas. After trying on a pair for the first time that don’t squish my feet, now I finally get what the fuss is about!

Best Outfits of 2016

Fashion blogger Stephanie of FAIIINT all black everything dark street style goth best outfits of 2016 compilation.

Between holiday packing and Christmas festivities I didn’t get chance to look back over the last year and put together my usual roundup before I left. I do enjoy looking back though, and I find it’s pretty useful in helping develop my style further and also to avoid becoming lazy, or stuck in a rut with it. So, a very belated compilation of my favourite outfits from 2016!

One of the main things I noticed whilst trying to pick favourites this year, is that I actually really liked almost all of them. I had quite a hard time narrowing them down, whereas in previous years I’ve had clear favourites and plenty that I shot, but then realised I really didn’t like. It’s funny how unforgiving the camera can be sometimes! I’m not sure if this is a good thing, in that I’m developing and standards have gotten higher, or a bad thing, maybe they’ve been a little safe and there’s been less experimenting?

The big experiment of the year was the black and white striped sundress. I was so unsure about this dress when I first got it, it’s quite bold with the huge blocky stripes and I really didn’t know if I could pull it off. I’m a little surprised that even now, looking back on it, I still really love it! It’s striking and very unusual for me, but I still think it fits with my aesthetic and works. I’m looking forward to hopefully getting to wear it to a few weddings or events this summer to give it a proper outing.

My favourite buy of the year was the Rick Owens leather jacket. I only posted two outfits including it, but I think both of those outfits are easily in my top 5. I could wear just a simple black dress with this and it would still be a killer outfit, it’s such a great statement making piece it really doesn’t need anything else.

Also, check out all the previous years compilations of you haven’t already. It’s starting to look more like a little style journey now there’s a few years worth – 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.

I’ve never been the best packer, I’m a ‘maybe I will need this 6th pair of shoes, I better throw them in’ kind of packer. When we booked our flights to Thailand and saw the layover was in Beijing, we thought why not extend it and spend a few nights there too? It was only after we’d spontaneously booked the flights that we realised Beijing is in the dead of winter! With four internal flights once we’re in Thailand and a small baggage allowance, I started to worry how we were going to manage to stuff coats, boots and jumpers into our already full cases.

My plan is thin, light layers and thermals under everything! I brought this jacket from H&M last year, mostly because it was in the sale and ridiculously cheap for a down feather filled jacket. I’ve worn it a handful of times to walk Nico and then I’d kind of forgotten about it, until I realised it would be perfect for this trip. It’s lightweight, warm and snuggly with it’s fluffy down filling and faux fur collar. Plus, it folds down into the tiniest little bundle, perfect for packing.

I always travel in trainers anyway, so it made sense to choose a less rigid pair that would take up the minimal amount of space once packed. The Nike LunarCharge is a mash up of some of Nike’s most popular womens trainers styles including the Air Max 90, Air Current and Air Presto, and I think I love them. The black on black colourway and mixture of different textures is everything I love in a trainer, plus they’re super comfy and springy. I think they’ll serve me well walking through the snowy streets of Beijing!

Bobble

As much as I love dressing for the winter, doing outfit posts at this time of year is possibly one of my least favourite things. I get to wear some of my all time favourite combinations and yet, when the daylight hours start drawing in at around 3pm, it means it’s kind of a nightmare actually photographing any of them. We finally managed to shoot this hazy, super casual outfit just as the last of the light was disappearing last week.

I mentioned a little while ago in my autumn wish list that I had started looking for a replacement for my favourite, but now falling to bits pom pom beanie. The original was super cheap, but it was better than all of the others I’d seen on the high street with its snug fit and huge fuzzy pom pom. I’ve been cursing myself ever since it started looking tatty for not getting a few backups.

I searched everywhere, from cheap to high end, but I just couldn’t find another which quite measured up to it. They just weren’t the same. Then, as if by some winter miracle Irisie got in touch and there, sitting in their accessories section, was my favourite hat! It’s kind of funny how attached you can get to something that you only picked up on a whim, but I’ve definitely ordered myself a few backups now!
