Minimal Oriental

April 1st 2013 Covet

Minimal, Oriental, Wish List, SS13, Spring Summer 2013, Allsaints, Zara, Rick Owens, COS, Topshop, & Other Stories, Haider Ackermann

AllSaints Shirt Dress / Zara Wrap Striped Shirt / AllSaints Clutch / Rick Owens Wedges
Zara Skort / COS Cut Out Necklace
& Other Stories Platform Sandals / Haider Ackermann Obi Belt / Topshop Dress

It’ll come as no surprise that I’m excited about all of the oriental influences that seemed to show up everywhere on the Spring/Summer catwalks, being a bit of a Japanophile myself. I’ve taken inspiration from traditional oriental dress, particularly from China & Japan, many times for my own projects at college & university. I always preferred the mens garments though, they still have those lovely crisp, distinctive silhouettes, but without the fussiness of all the prints & decoration that you usually associate with this kind of dress.

It’s a more relaxed, minimal take & it’s great to see so much of it about for Spring. There are so many pieces I’ve got bookmarked to buy, but these are just a few of my favourites. I like that most pieces just hint at the inspiration with their high mandarin collars, wrapped fronts & origami inspired folding, it’s so subtle. There’s nothing worse than looking like you’ve dressed head to toe in the new seasons trend, but these pieces are timeless & would slot effortlessly into my current wardrobe.

I just saw the skort in white, which I didn’t care for (diapers?) But the black is soooo much better. I would wear these in black…

One thing I really like about your wishlist is how I can quite quickly imagine every single piece together. I have that Topshop black dress on mine too – it’s so cute!

Yes it is! I keep checking my store to see if they have it in yet, I’m curious what the fabric’s like as I think it could make or break it for me, in terms of purchasing it.

Isn’t it?! I was tempted to put the back on the image too cos it’s so nice, gotta love a sheer back! I don’t actually have anything with a mandarin collar, even though I really like them too, think I need to see to that! Hah! ;)

I love these platforms from & other stories. I am planning a London shopping trip and looking forward to checking out the store, have seen a few nice items on the website, but eager to see in the flesh. Especially keen to try all the cosmetics they do too.

Yes, me too. I’ve been stalking the online store & there’s so many pieces I like, but I want to see what kind of quality to expect, so I plan on going to the store too before I buy anything. I hate being disappointed when ordering online! I’m intrigued by the makeup too!

I can’t really do the oriental look or trend even though here you have presented really well and in my colours most is usually loud and lots of prints. I am def going to try the mandarin collar, I am sure you will rock this look no problem

That COS necklace is amazing, everytime I go into COS, I look at the jewellery and this one always stands out. I’m sure it was in the sale a little while ago? Not sure – I could be wrong though! The All Saints shirt dress is pretty awesome, can definitely see these fitting into your life!

Oh, tell me about it! I’m obsessed with their jewellery, such nice clean pieces. I’m planning to get it on my next trip down to London, so fingers crossed it might be in the Spring sale too! ;)

I’ve never taken to Oriental infused fashion mainly because I look awful in it lol. I do it no justice. But doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the amazing structure and tailored lines that goes into each piece. I’m loving the Zara shirt, I think I’ve seen a handful of people wearing it around lately so thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I’m also a fan of oriental influences in fashion (to be honest I’m a big fan of Asia overall and I think Asian countries are my favourite destinations…)! Steph, you put together a great selection: may I have the stripy top and the black dress…please?! Caterina
