Next is one of those stores that everyone seems to have a preconceived opinion of as a bit ‘mumsy‘, somewhere older ladies shop for safe, nice quality basics. I have a lot of pieces from there that leave my friends open mouthed in disbelief when I tell them that it’s from Next, this beautiful coat & these faux leather trousers being prime examples.

I’ve had so many compliments on the coat already, the huge fold over collar & leather detailing make it quite a standout piece, and I haven’t seen anything else like it on the highstreet either. Like everything from Next, the quality is so good for a highstreet store, it’s thick & warm, well made & you know it’s going to last. I think this is part of the reason people see the store the way they do, but personally I love that they’re not so trend led & instead focus on producing highly affordable, quality, classic pieces that will last. If you haven’t ventured into Next recently, I urge you to go & check it out, I think you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised!

I had been searching for a good pair of leather trousers for such a long time. Despite usually not liking faux leather, I decided a real leather pair were just not a good idea for me. I know I am far too lazy & would never get around to getting them dry cleaned, and for something that tight, that would just be gross! This pair are the perfect alternative, the fabric is soft & supple, with a matte, faintly textured finish which stops them from looking cheap or tacky, like you probably imagine when I say faux. They’re a great versatile piece & I have been getting so much wear out of them recently, mostly because they are just so comfortable & warm!

Next?! no way! I was saying at the weekend to a friend, if there is one shop I wont shop in, even if and when I am 70 it is Next. I used to pop in at lunch because there wasn’t anywhere else to go and it was all baaaad. Saying that, I bet it depends which store you go in. Plus – never say never!

Definitely, I used to be the same – It was somewhere not even my Mum shopped when I was growing up! Honestly though, it has really changed, it surprised me how many things I wanted from their recent collections!

Wow I never thought a total-black outfit could be so unique! So many textures! I have never even set foot inside Next, but now I think that in the week-end I definitely need to have a look at it

The collar on the coat is wonderful – very dramatic. I know what you mean about sometimes finding gems in the most unexpected places. In Australia, there’s a chain called Trenery, which is pitched towards the 40+ market…but I love shopping there because they do great basics and lovely quality. Plus they’re less trend-driven, which I always enjoy. Sometimes it pays to shop outside of your demographic, right?

I totally agree, and I’m starting to do so more & more recently. I even went into Marks & Spencer the other day & fell in love with a dress, I never thought I’d be saying that! To be honest I think when you wear almost exclusively black you can find pieces you’ll like in pretty much every store, regardless of their target market, so I’m starting to be a bit more open minded about which ones I choose to visit :)

Cool outfit. I feel the same about American Apparel. I always find great looking, well-made, edgy basics. Lucky for black-wearers, the good stuff tends to stand out in a sea of…well, crap! :)

Yeah, it does a little. The only thing I’m not keen on is the poppers, I think I’m going to take them off as you can’t really button it all the way up anyway. So many ‘uncool’ brands are upping their game recently, I’m finding it hard to keep up with them all!

Oh that coat is perfect for you! I think next in the last couple of years is becoming more modern but keeping the design very casual and for the everyday styling. That coat looks like a such a statemente piece!
