LFW SS15 : Street Style

September 19th 2014 Life

London Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street StyleLondon Fashion Week Spring Summer 2015 Somerset House Street Style

I called this post ‘street style’ but to be honest it’s more just a series of candid photos from around Somerset House, I am far to shy & awkward to walk over to strangers and ask them to stop to pose for a photo of their outfit! Instead I just lurked around, sneaking quick candid shots of people walking by me & the general atmosphere. Maybe next time I’ll be a little more ballsy & stop people, but to be honest I kind of like the more natural feel.

I didn’t actually plan to make this a full post, I took these mostly for myself & to get in some proper practice to help me further get to grips with using the DSLR on manual, but I liked the way they came out, so I didn’t want them to just sit in a folder on my desktop & be forgotten about. I know I’m saying that a lot recently, but for someone who couldn’t even get a decently focused photo out of it in the beginning I’m proud of how much better I’ve got in a short space of time, and of how I’m actually starting to really like some of the shots I’ve taken. Though admittedly I did miss a lot of great outfits because of my shaky hands or not having the settings adjusted right! It’s a learning curve I know, and whilst I’m sure I’ll never be upto Ollie’s standard, hopefully I’ll soon be good enough that I don’t feel like I have to apologise to you guys for the drop in quality when ever I’ve had to do the photos! I’m only half joking there.

I spoke with quite a few people about how there were way less of the crazy outfits that we’ve come to expect this season, everyone seemed much more casual & practical, which honestly I preferred. I’m really not the greatest fan of that idea of throwing together the craziest outfit you have in an attempt to get photographed! Some of these I’ve included because I liked their outfits, others purely because I liked the photo.

One of my favourite things about Fashion Week is walking around the showrooms, getting to meet the designers or PRs for some of your favourite brands & being introduced to new ones too. It’s one thing to see pieces on the catwalk, but it’s another to get up close & be able to feel the materials & admire the little details. In the past at events like this & trade shows I’ve found brands are not too keen to have photos taken of their products, for fear of copycats replicating their designs, this time however I was surprised how many encouraged me to take photos when they saw the camera swinging from my arm & heard about the blog, so I thought it’d be nice to do a little highlights post of my favourites.

Until I started putting this post together I didn’t realise how many of my photos were of jewellery, I often go through phases of wearing none or piling it on & at the moment I think I’m on a bit of a jewellery kick, I can’t stop buying it or finding new designers to obsess over. It’s always nice to see favourites like Kasun (how awesome is his crocodile display?!), Maya Magal & Rachel Boston, who’s new rune rings & choker I completely fell in love with. Whilst browsing I was also super excited to discover Kirstie MacLaren‘s thick polished collars & Noritamy‘s beautifully organic pieces in black, frosted & gold too.

One of the designers I was sad to not see on the schedule was Haizhen Wang, I love his softly architectural pieces, but thankfully upstairs there was a small section of beautiful new season pieces on display, crisp tailoring contrasted with fluid swathes & twists of fabric & unfinished raw edges. I gasped at the white jacket, it’s a shame the photo really doesn’t do it justice. Up until this point I’d been pretty disappointed in the lack of shoes I liked on display, you guys know I’m an addict & I didn’t come across any I loved enough to photograph. Wang’s asymmetric, block heeled beauties soon changed that though, I now have yet another pair of black boots to add to my ever growing wishlist!

Jean-Pierre Braganza Spring/Summer 2015

Jean-Pierre Braganza is fast becoming my favourite London based designer, this was the one show I was most excited to see over the whole 5 days & he did not disappoint. My original plan for London Fashion Week coverage was to do a few highlights posts with a good mixture of photos, as I figure if you guys wanted in-depth reports & clean catwalk shots of each & every show, you’d just go to style.com because they do a far better job of it than me. I was so pleased with how these photos came out though, especially as I’ve never shot anything like this before and looking back through them there were just too many I liked & too many beautiful looks, so it seemed only fair to give it it’s own post.

I always admire designers that are happy to shun the trends & instead stay true to their own vision & signatures each season whilst still keeping it fresh. It’s nice to know what to expect, and yet still be surprised. This season Matthew Barney’s film ‘River of Fundament’ & the decay of Detroit’s industry was translated into fractured, angular colour blocking, perfect little slices of skin peeking through cut-outs & sheer panels and of course the masterful sharp tailoring, drapery & striking use of print that we have come to expect.

Later in the day I went upstairs to the showrooms to take a look at the pieces in person and the catwalk photos really do not do justice to the level of intricate detail here, jewel encrusted shoulders & hems with wispy feather details, impeccably sharp tailoring & the motorcycle inspired prints are even more beautiful up close. I’ll include some shots of these in my next posts for you guys to see too. The sculptural cut-out black dress, the black & white silk shirt dress with printed chest panel & the black tailored waistcoat with draped skirt were a few of my favourites.
