Belstaff Biker Jacket / TIALS ‘Pom Pom’ Dress * / FAIIINT Faux Fur Snood / Topshop Boutique Boots / Balenciaga City

This dress from Bali based label TIALS makes me feel like some kind of gothy cheerleader, with it’s satin godets & a-line shape, and I mean that in the best possible way! There’s nothing like slipping on something a little fun when it’s such a miserable day. I had to throw my Belstaff on over the top to toughen it up a bit though.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s wondered why dresses all seem to be so short these days? Or am I just getting old? I hate the idea of being ‘too old’ to wear certain things, I say wear whatever you feel comfortable in, but I have to admit over the past few years I’ve been debating whether I am now over the age for wearing mini dresses & skirts like this one.

I can’t escape the fact I’ve started feeling more & more self-conscious in such short styles recently, finding myself constantly tugging at the hems & pulling them down, and my long torso doesn’t help either, making dresses a good few centimeters shorter on me than they’re supposed to be. I think I can still just get away with this one, thanks to the fullness which stops it from feeling too revealing, but I think the time has come to clear out my more fitted mini styles, which have been unworn for months & months now.

Glossy

ARK Patent Skater Skirt / Charkviani ‘Marilyn’ Boots / Hawick Cashmere Beanie

Since buying myself that French Connection skirt I was craving a few months ago I’ve become a little obsessed with skater skirts. You’ll be seeing more of that particular skirt soon, as I can’t stop wearing it! They’re not something I’d usually find myself searching for, but to be honest I’ve been kind of enjoying the hint of girliness it adds to my outfits, it’s a nice little change and so I’ve been trying to hunt down a few others too. I really love this super glossy patent version from ARK, it’s almost veering into tacky territory, but I kind of like that & you know I love to play with lots of different textures. Paired with the right items I think the slick plastic would add a wonderful extra dimension to an all black outfit.

Another thing I’ve been searching for is another great cropped jacket, I wear my Todd Lynn x Topshop one to death (as I’m sure you’re aware!) & I’d probably say it’s my most favourite jacket. The cropped length & fitted shape just works so well with everything I own, and really seems to suit my shape too. I stumbled across this one from Mint Velvet on one of my late night browses, it’s an absolute steal & I could have kicked myself when I saw my size was totally out of stock! Obviously it was not meant to be, so I guess I’ll just have to continue looking and at least I still have something to do in the early hours when my insomnia strikes! Though, if any of you do happen to come across a perfect little cropped jacket, I’d really appreciate a heads up!

Sorry I’ve been a little M.I.A recently, the constant rain made it impossible to go outside to take any outfit shots (luckily no flooding here though) & then I came down with an awful head cold that feels like it’s now turning into a chest infection – Nico thinks I’m barking at him every time I cough! I’ve spent the last week hiding on the sofa feeling sorry for myself, drinking hot tea, eating junk & watching Fringe and Attack On Titan.

My default outfit when I’m feeling rubbish is a chunky hat & lots of drapey black layers, I think the feeling of being all wrapped up in soft fabrics is just somehow comforting, especially when you’re ill. I found that ASOS are now selling a thinner version of my favourite chunky cardigan I got from them last year, and it’s so perfect for this, so of course I had to get myself one! I’m very tempted to order the longline version too, plus maybe a backup as well! I always find myself regretting not buying spares when I come across really great, cheap basics like these & I still wish I’d brought another of the chunky version, that’s now sold out.

Talking of layering, I always love pieces with built in layers, like this dress I recently got from AngelEye. The double chiffon frill at the top of an otherwise basic fitted dress is the perfect little detail on it’s own, but it also calls out to be worn with lots of other cascading black layers like this too.
