A little bit of a different post today, but it’s something I’m incredibly passionate about & I feel like it’d be a great shame if I couldn’t use the blog to talk about & highlight causes like this. Last week we headed down to Woodside Animal Centre, Leicester’s branch of the RSPCA, to see the animals & to talk with Gary, the branches manager, about all the good work they do & their latest fundraising appeal to raise £1M for a much needed on-site veterinary facility.

If you’ve ever spoken to me for any length of time, I’m sure you’ll quickly realise that I’m a massive animal lover. I’m not the greatest people person, but show me a dog, cat, ferret, rat or even a snake & I’ll suddenly have the hugest smile. I’ve always said that if I ever could afford to, I’d like to get a big house with a good sized garden so that I could help foster & re-home all of those animals that struggle in shelters or that they won’t take. Nothing makes me sadder, or angrier than seeing animals confused & distressed from neglect or abandonment. It’s so unfair.

Woodside Animal Centre is Leicester’s main re-homing centre, taking in over 75 animals every week & although they are part of the RSPCA, they are a separate self-funding charity that relies entirely on donations from the public, they receive none from the RSPCA or the government. Woodside prides themselves on being one of the top performing centres in the UK & having one of the lowest return animal rates in the UK. Their staff and volunteers work tirelessly to treat & rehabilitate even the most difficult of cases, providing medical treatment, behavioural training & finding them the right homes. Currently they are really struggling to meet the increasing cost in vets bills as they have to take all of their animals to outside surgeries & if prices keep rising, they will simply not be able to afford to provide this much needed care for the hundreds of animals that arrive each month. To combat this they aim to build an on-site veterinary surgery at the centre, cutting their costs massively & saving animals the distress of having to be driven elsewhere too.

They are currently just over halfway towards their funding goal, and have set themselves a challenge in hopes of boosting the money raised & reaching that target – On the 29th of March 2015, a team of seven staff from Woodside Animal Centre & a pack of Huskies will sled across the Arctic Circle for six days. Braving temperatures as low as -30°C, they will cover 25 miles a day, sleep in flimsy tents and live on basic rations. I’m a little jealous, though I know it’s going to be incredibly tough. They’re hoping to raise £25,000 in sponsorship towards their target, and you can help them reach their goal (and hopefully smash it!) by donating via JustGiving here, or in the UK text ARCTIC to 70500 (to make a £5 donation). I honestly couldn’t think of a better cause, and every pound counts!

As we walked around the kennels it saddened me to see just how many bull breeds were in the centre, mainly Staffordshire Bull Terriers & crosses, the stereotype of them being vicious or aggressive is obviously still prominent in peoples minds, but it’s completely untrue. I’ve known a lot of them, and I honestly don’t think you’d find a sweeter or soppier dog! They are soft & playful, and extremely loyal, so please don’t let the news stories put you off. Just look at little Max in the first photo, I’ve never met a bigger sweetheart, he was so affectionate & would have been happy to let me stroke him for hours!

There was also a large amount of Siberian Huskies & crosses, all around 1-2 years old, so just out of the cute puppy stage and of course this made me very upset to see. If you are considering a Husky, please do your research first, there are too many in shelters because people don’t bother to & it angers me. They are not a breed for everyone, they are needy, highly intelligent, stubborn, vocal & have specific requirements that need to be met to keep them happy & engaged, otherwise you’ll have an out of control ball of fur destroying your house & sanity out of boredom! It seems a lot of people don’t realise this, and as soon as they grow they quickly tire of their antics & give them up. It’s a huge shame, yes they are hard work, but they are totally worth it & so rewarding too if you have the time & patience! Gus the Husky x Collie cross with the cone completely stole my heart with his sad eyes & sweet personality, as well as Chase the GSD x Husky who I had a little chat with (it’s funny how talkative they are once they know you ‘speak husky’… Awooo!) Eskie the Husky was very down & clearly not enjoying kennel life, he made me want to just give him a big hug & take him home. They are all incredibly well looked after with multiple walks & play every day, but sadly some dogs just don’t cope with this kind of environment & it made me think of Nico, as I know he’d be the same, they are a very people orientated breed & most can’t bear to be alone.

All of the dogs & cats in this post are currently available for re-homing along with many others, plus small animals & birds too, so if you are based in Leicester & are looking for a pet, please consider paying them a visit & giving one of these guys a forever home!

Currently at the top of my wishlist of things I’ve fallen in love with but doubt I will ever be able to afford is this Temperley London feathered coat. Yes, I have a faux fur coat kind of similar, but the wispy feathers & the silk lining make this one far more special, I’ve been daydreaming about how luxurious it’d feel to wear. It’s completely impractical & I can imagine the looks I’d get wearing it around here, but I still can’t stop thinking about it! The rest of this list is pretty much what I’d wear with it, because this is what I do when I can’t afford something, I torture myself by planning perfect little outfits with it as the focus!

I’m still trying to behave with the sales, I’ve had my eye on this Narciso Rodriguez skirt for the longest time, to me it’s leather skirt perfection with the shaped hem & angular seams, and now it’s 75% off I’m finding it extremely hard to resist. The same with Alexander Wang’s Katya sandals too, the ultimate minimal summer sandal, super classic they’d be so easy to justify as a good investment piece if I wasn’t trying to cut back on shoes!

When I went down to the F&F press day with Tara last year, we both couldn’t stop talking about how impressed we were with all of the pieces as we left, beautiful fabrics, well cut & it all looked so much more expensive then the tiny price tags attached. We couldn’t believe this was from a supermarket fashion label! Annoyingly, my card corrupted the photos I took on the day so I couldn’t post them up at the time (I’ve learned my lesson & ditched the cheap card!) but the pieces are finally trickling into stores now & I can’t wait to show you guys the rest!

This shift dress is exactly what I’m talking about, the material is a lovely thick crepe with just the right amount of heaviness, a great A-line cut & it’s really well made inside too, something I always find myself scrutinising. It’s one of those great all round basics, but with a nice little detail with the multiple zip pockets (yes, they work! No faux pockets here!) keeping it from being too plain. It’s so nice to see a brand upping their game so much, but keeping their prices super affordable & in line with what their customers expect.

I feel that I always seem to post summer wishlists around this same time every year, I love the cooler months but this is about when it hits me that I’m starting to get sick of being constantly cold & seeing grey miserable skies out of my window and I start longing for warm summer days & a little sunshine.

Last year I got hooked on little bralettes, and now have a whole drawer full of them, yet I still find myself buying more! They’re so perfect for under sheer tops & with tanks, and are a great way to layer a little in the summer too. I really love the central strap detail on this one from Silence & Noise, and the minimal styling & longer length which keeps it kind of sporty looking, I imagine it peeking out from a low cut tank top or under this draped blouse. I feel these kind of looks always work best with really minimal, effortless jewellery otherwise it becomes bit too fussy. The tusk lariat necklace is the perfect, easy accent to low cut & draped necklines, and George Pragnell‘s rose gold knot ring is simple, yet eye-catching.

I definitely don’t need anymore shoes, but I always torture myself by window shopping the sales & inevitably come across pairs like these Cinzia Araia wedges, one left in my size & heavily discounted and then spend the next few days trying to justify buying them! I have been being good with clearing my old pairs out & have given away a lot too, so does this mean I deserve a new pair or is that a rubbish justification?!

Fashion blogger Stephanie of FAIIINT wearing H&M faux fur shaggy jacket, Helmut Lang tee, FAIIINT clothing swathe draped skirt, Elemental Luxury Quartz Neclace & Ring, Ash Fancy BIS laser cut out leather boots, Mulberry Mabel bag. I chanced upon this jacket whilst browsing the H&M sale a few weeks ago, just one left in my size & for £15. I wasn’t sure if I’d keep it but I ordered it anyway, I was kind of intrigued by the fact it was described as ‘dark plum’ even though it looked black, I’ve become a little obsessed with these not-quite-black kind of shades lately. When it arrived I fell in love with the colour, definitely black but with a purple sheen when the light hits it & the cuddly, shaggy, slightly scruffy texture, plus it’s cropped which makes it much easier to wear & layer up than my old longer length version.

Elemental Luxury‘s quartz rings have been on my mental ‘to buy’ list for a while, and when I saw this beautiful blackened Tibetan Phantom Quartz one I knew I had to finally place an order. I’ve made myself a promise to buy more things from the wonderful independent designers I follow over various social networks, and this was my first purchase this year, though I intend to make many more! It’s hard to capture just how beautiful the ring & the necklace are in photos, trust me when I say they are even better in person, I was blown away when I opened the package. My favourite combination lately has been pairing it with my Bloody Mary Metal Fire Alchemy Ring & the personalised Stack Ring, stamped with a little S♥ that was in my Christmas bauble from their Winterspell Party. It’s so simple, but I’ve barely taken this little ring off, I have plans to add a few more Stacks to my collection asap!

I live in boots all year, even in the Summer and these new additions from Ash could not be a more perfect boot for the hot weather. Peep toes & with that awesome laser cut texture, they’re super light & airy, incredibly comfortable and they nail that combination of style & functionality that I always love. I can see myself living in these when it gets warmer, sadly it was just far too cold to brave the outside in them alone today, though I do quite like the black-on-black layering of them over tights too.

PS : Because the jersey collection has been selling so well (honestly I am completely overwhelmed with all the orders!), and as a thankyou, I’m extending the 10% off + free worldwide shipping offer until Friday! Shop the collection here & enter code ‘jerseylaunch’ at the checkout. This skirt has been far & away the best seller, which is nice to see as it’s my favourite & most worn piece too. Those of you waiting on orders, the first lot are being shipped out today, but please be aware of the 2-3 weeks dispatch time as they’re all handmade to order, I’ll have them with you as soon as possible.
