As promised, I finally got around to re-shooting the outfit I wore to my little cousins wedding a few weeks ago. I had been aiming to get a few photos quickly at the church on the actual day, but as we were also the wedding photographers (hence my camera sized bag here & not a delicate clutch!) there was just no time spare, so I got plenty of weird looks and stares when I put this outfit back on and walked down to the park in it to get some photos yesterday afternoon!

Usually when I’m invited to a wedding I get asked ‘please don’t wear black!’, and of course if the Bride asks me not to I’ll go out and buy something more fitting for the day, but thankfully my cousin said she didn’t mind when I asked her. I’m trying to limit my spending, so I turned to my wardrobe to see what I could put together and found this maxi dress. It’s been hanging in there for months, it’s a bit too long to wear without towering heels, and a little too impractical and princess-ish to wear casually, so I’ve never really had a good occasion to pull it out until now.

I still wanted to make sure it looked at least a little like a wedding guest outfit, like I’d made an effort and not just turned up in my normal everyday wear, so I started hunting for a nice headpiece to finish it off, and that’s when I stumbled upon Gypsy Rose Vintage. I loved that her crowns were more wild looking and organic with the mixtures of flowers, leaves and sprigs of wild flowers, instead of just a row of oversized roses like you usually see. I fell hard for her ‘Bella Rose’ crown, but I’d had an image of a dark purple/pink one in my head that I just couldn’t shake. I emailed Rebecca to ask if it was possible to make a custom one in these colours, half expecting that she would say it was too short notice, but she couldn’t have been more helpful. She hunted down the most perfect selection of flowers in exactly the colours I’d been thinking of, emailed me throughout to get my input and when it arrived it was even more beautiful than I’d imagined! The flowers are such lovely quality, and as it’s a whole band it can be worn multiple different ways on the head. One things for sure, I’ll be taking the first excuse that comes along to wear this again!

Summer means wedding season, and apparently you can’t wear black to a wedding, as I’m continuously told every time I get invited to one! In the past I’ve gone out & brought dresses in purples, blush & dove grey purely for this purpose to keep everyone happy, knowing I’ll never wear them again. It’s a huge waste of money, I usually just end up giving them away after as there’s no point them sitting in my wardrobe collecting dust, and honestly it’s kind of ridiculous – black is smart, classy & super polished, so what’s so bad about wearing it to a wedding?

I did actually wear black to my cousins wedding a few weeks ago, as you might have seen on Instagram and I’ve been meaning to get some proper outfit photos of it to prove that it can totally be wedding appropriate with the right styling. Sadly the weather has other ideas right now! I have two more weddings in the next few months too, and I fully intend on wearing black to both of them as well, so when Vashi got in touch to ask what my perfect wedding outfit would be I thought it’d be a good excuse for some wishlist outfit planning!

I think the key to making this work is keeping it simple with feminine silhouettes & fabrics, like this wonderful lace trimmed French Connection dress, and then picking a few pretty accessories to help you fit in amongst all the florals & pastels that everyone else will undoubtedly be wearing. This way you still have a nice dress that you’ll be happy to re-wear, instead of one brought just for this occasion and never to see the light of day again. Jennifer Behr‘s garland crown does this so effortlessly, and it’s subtle enough that you could wear it casually too, honestly I’m already dreaming up outfit possibilities and cost per wear to justify buying it!

Isn’t it glorious that first day of the year you can finally leave the house without stuffing a jacket or cardigan in your bag? I’m making the most of it, as you know how British weather is & it looks like it’s going to be short lived with more rain on the way. I pulled out one of my favourite summery dresses, I love the softly draped chiffon & how easy to wear this Warehouse one is, and headed out shopping. It’s strange how despite having a bit of a stressful week, the nice weather and putting on a favourite dress instantly lifted my mood. Or was it wearing these latest additions to my jewellery collection that did it?

These two striking Labradorite necklaces from RegalRose arrived last week and I haven’t been able to stop staring at them since. They catch the light so beautifully, changing colours from greenish greys and blacks to purple with flashes of gold and metallic blue, it’s like a stormy aurora or a little cosmos trapped in a pendent around my neck. The photos do not do these justice at all, there’s really something kind of magical about watching them glint & change in the sunlight.
